Not long ago I read the E-Myth by Michael Gerber. I’m not going to spoil it for you. However, there’s one important nugget I believe all entrepreneurs should understand. The most important idea related to business I’ve ever heard.
It’s one word.
That word is SYSTEM. The dictionary defines a system as “a method or set of procedures for achieving something.” A system is a method of operation. A method of operation is something that works again and again. According to Gerber, if you don’t have systems for your business you don’t have a business.
Gerber adds that most entrepreneurs are slaves to their business because they don’t have systems at work for them. In addition, Gerber found that most businesses fail due to the burnout of the owner.The business owner simply doesn’t have methods of operation or systems in place. They’re forced to handle the payroll, management, marketing, sales…
…all by themselves.
Alone.
Overworked.
Exhausted.
The entrepreneur fails….
What’s really SCARY is that most businesses don’t have reliable systems for their sales and marketing. Sales and marketing adds even more emphasis to SYSTEMS. Remember, the life blood of any business is customers.

In other words, do you have a reliable method of operation that consistently brings you new business? Gerber uses McDonald’s as an example due to their franchisee 90% success rate. A 90% success rate means that McDonald’s is so turn-key that you can succeed despite yourself. Their systems are so magnificent that punk teenagers can manage their restaurants.
